There is a long story how this exhibit / museum came into
being but the short story is
that Kevin Costner bought some land just north of Deadwood and was going to
build a big hotel and casino themed in tribute to Tatonka (buffalo) right after
he
finished filming Dances with Wolves because he was so impressed with the
buffalo.
He even commissioned a local artist to make about 36 life size bronze statues
of Indians running buffalo over a cliff. Then he couldn't get permission
from Deadwood
for the zoning for the casino because they were afraid that it would pull
business
from thier downtown casinos....so he ended up making this tribute to the
buffalo....what
else are you going to do with 36 life size statues of a buffalo massacre. LOL
It was one of the high points of the trip for me actually :)
